The NEW Randy Hare Detection Box
These are the NEW UPDATED boxes used in the updated Award Winning video series,
Advancements in The Randy Hare Method of Detection Training.
Each box is 20.5" tall x 11.75" wide x 7” deep. The specification of these boxes has been refined based on years of substance detector dog training in addition to Randy’s methodology. The Randy Hare Detection Box now features the POD which houses the substance and discourages, by it's very nature, any oral response. Because target odor is now placed in the POD, boxes can be used within categories of substance with no need for a dedicated box per odor. This reduces the number of boxes required and allows boxes used one day as a target box to be used as distraction boxes the next. Most importantly, The POD makes transition of target source seamless. The POD can be attached, placed into or onto any variety of substrates or areas for searches.

Through the use of the Detection Box, Randy simultaneously teaches the dog a clear detection response while neutralizing concomitant odors. Through uniquely coupling the odor response with positive fight drive through, what Randy terms "Game", the dog is Classical Conditioned to seek target odor source as the only outlet to this urge. Randy consistently produces an incredibly successful detector dog that relies on his experience regardless of distraction.
During final design, Randy worked with engineer Chet Robarts to make them as efficient, effective and durable as possible. The boxes are very “tight” having been built to very precise measurements. They are crafted by professional cabinet-makers for consistency in commercial build materials, gap tolerances and durability. These boxes utilize a professional grade sealant (common in nearly all furniture) to reduce the amount of moisture absorbed (dog saliva, concomitant odor, dirt, etc.) allowing the box to be wiped clean of undesirable residue with a moist cloth. In addition, and perhaps most importantly, the POD can be removed and cleaned independently allowing the box to be repurposed as a neutral box immediately.
The boxes including the new POD are sold and shipped 5 at a time per shipping unit. The brackets for the back of the box are included with all required hardware. The price of each individual box is $169.00 and they are sold and shipped in crates of 5 boxes per crate bringing the price of one crate to $845.00 before shipping. A quantity of 10 boxes is enough to set up a short-rack and have 3 or 4 boxes designated for categories of substance now as opposed to individual odors. This means that if you teach only narcotics detection, there are now 10 boxes and none of them are now exclusively for any particular target source. The POD itself can be moved from box to box. Each box weighs just over 14 Pounds bringing the shipping weight to just over 70 pounds. The integrity of the boxes is protected during shipping by wrapping the boxes to protect from outside contamination.
There are a few companies selling detection boxes that on the surface look very similar to The Randy Hare Detection Box. While it should be understood that the box is just a tool that maximizes the training experience, inferior boxes will lack durability, consistency of commercial materials and overall build quality. Keep in mind that through use and design, the materials and build have been implemented for not only durability and concomitant odor resistance. The updates to the box not only allow for wider use of the box and POD but also to reduce possible injury to your service dog. We suggest you do your research carefully. It should be noted that Randy Hare’s Detection Boxes are designed and built to spec for a variety of reasons. The modification to a smaller size, is driven by purpose.
