Utilized by the highest levels of government including the DEA, FBI, Navy Seals, Army Rangers, Border Patrol, Homeland Security, National Institutes of Health as well as military and law enforcement agencies worldwide, Randy’s logical system has evolved tremendously. Randy’s previous career as a law enforcement K9 handler engaged in highway interdiction shaped his desire for a comprehensive system that neutralized the errors in other systems while maximizing accuracy, reliability and credibility in a court of law.
This updated series details this new system; it’s many changes, improvements, advancements and contains more comprehensive explanation throughout. The main tenets of the system remain solidly rooted in self-learning through the construction and manipulation of environment, self reliance and the critical importance of what Randy originally termed and is widely referred to as “obedience to odor”, this fourth title in the series covers the foundation stages in training the substance detector dog. Whether narcotics, explosives, biologicals or essential oils for civilian Nose Work, Randy’s incredibly versatile system can be used for any substance. Because the Hare Method is a professional detection dog system, many of the intricacies lost in other systems abound here. A very strong emphasis is placed on the dog being completely reliant on his nose while completely ignoring visual and auditory distractions.
Because dog selection is critical for long-term deployment success, Randy discusses his method of selecting for positive fight drive, “short range drive" and the critical importance of “game at source” in conditioning the dog for clearly recognizable changes in behavior through expectation of reward. Through shaping alert behaviors with a secondary reinforcer from the start of training in the presence of target substance, the process of odor discrimination is fast, natural and occurs easily through Randy's logical process of training. Because the dog’s experience with primary alert behaviors is taught in a lower drive state utilizing food, training progresses very quickly.
Through redesigned detection boxes and the addition of the “POD”, training now becomes multi-dimensional, less expensive and incredibly portable. Following the belief that equipment is simply a tool to shape learning, the boxes themselves are now used in discrimination exercises once the target odor-reward association is made. This association is discussed with historic footage of Ivan Pavlov and an explanation of conditioning. The Pavlovian conditioning of the target-odor reward association through “game at source” circumvents a multitude of problems encountered in other systems such as “lying”, “fringe alerts” and offering “final response” behaviors in the absence of target odor source. Because the dog works for “game at source” in Randy’s system, these problems are virtually eliminated in the Hare Method. Dr. Robert Bailey provides insight in Randy’s system throughout stating,
“The beautiful part of Randy’s approach is that you have combined Skinner and Pavlov so well.”
Creation of the hide, the changes to the Hare Detection Box, the addition and use of the “POD” and the order of target substance introduction is discussed. Through a tremendous amount of interview footage, careful discussion and detailed demonstration, a solid understanding of detection training will result. The many advantages of the Hare System, dog selection, conditioning initial alert behavior training with the secondary reinforcer, introduction of target substance, odor discrimination on the rack and the cycle of training sessions is demonstrated and detailed. This system is completely modifiable for any dog regardless of primary reinforcer type whether reward object (ball, tug etc.) or food.
