On Target- Training Substance Detector Dogs with Randy Hare- Detection 1 Streaming
The videos that started it all! Having done seminars for the FBI, DEA, Special Forces as well police departments domestic and abroad, Randy Hare’s revolutionary methods for training substance (drug, explosives, accelerants, biologicals) detector dogs is thought provoking and cutting-edge. It begins with a critical analysis and review of conventional detector dog training methods, and then presents the core ideas of the Hare Method:
- Part One: A critical look at canine substance detection training methods.
- A: The problem of extraneous cues.
- B: The problem of the handler as “teacher”.
- C: The problem of “separateness” of target and reward.
- D: The “band-aid”- handler skill.
- Part Two: The cardinal features of The Hare Method
- A: The dog educates himself.
- B: The handler is not the teacher.
- C: The dog learns what not to pay attention to.
- D: The target and reward are not the same.
The balance of the video is devoted to a step-by-step guide to Randy’s methods for using his invention, the Hare Detection Training box, to achieve the detector dog trainer’s first three objectives:
- Part Three: The Hare Method for Canine Detector Training
- Objective 1- Selecting a good detector dog prospect.
- Objective 2- Teaching the Target Odor-Reward Association.
- Objective 2- A: The Hare Detection Training Box
- Objective 2- B: Associating Target Odor and Reward
- Objective 3- Conditioning the Final Response
- Objective 3- The highly active dog
- Objective 3- The less active dog

On Target- Training Substance Detector Dogs with Randy Hare- Detection 2 Streaming
Video two of this series shows how to use Randy Hare’s ground-breaking methods to accomplish the next five learning objectives in the training of drug and explosive detector dogs.
Chapters include:
- Objective 4: Teaching the dog to divert his attention from reward to target odor.
- Objective 5: Establishing a cue for search behavior.
- Objective 6: The “Oral-Detection Response”
- 1: The oral response reduces the probability of false alarms.
- 2. The oral response delays the final response.
- 3. By delaying the final response, the oral response can minimize property damage.
- Teaching the “Oral-Detection Response”
- Objective 7: Extending the Search. 1. The Box room.
- Objective 8: Teaching the dog to ignore distracters.
- 1. Simple visual and auditory distracters.
- 2. Simple odor distracters.
- 3. Concomitant odor distracters.
- 3. Concomitant odor distracters. A. Reduce predictive value of concomitants.
- 3. Concomitant odor distracters. B. Extinguish responding to concomitants.
- 4. Concomitant handler distracters. (handler cues)
- 5. The Scent Box as a distracter.
- Scent Boxes: Summary
- The Hare Detection Method: The distinction between instructional and practical models.
- Conclusion
Once these objectives are achieved, then the student detector dog will have achieved the special attributes of the Hare-trained detector dog: The dog will possess a crystal-clear understanding of his task, and he will display the kind of obedience to odor that makes it virtually impossible to disturb or distract him during search or indication.
He will also exhibit an extraordinary degree of independence and self-belief while searching. Finally, the dog will display pronounced and obvious changes of behavior when he encounters target odor, accompanied by prolonged and intensive efforts to pinpoint the odor source prior to making a final indication.

On Target- Training Substance Detector Dogs with Randy Hare- Detection 3 Streaming
This third, and final video, in this award-winning series details Randy’s procedure for finishing the detector dog’s education in real world situations while learning the final six objectives. In addition, the training of the passive detection dog is taught in detail using a contact or close acknowledgement response to pinpoint target substance.
Chapters include:
- Objective 09: Recognizing additional target substances
- Objective 10: The Oral and Acknowledgement Game 1
- Objective 11: The Oral Game 2- Problems of Access and Puzzles
- Objective 12: Introducing vehicle searches and the Oral Response
- Objective 13: Including the Final Response in Vehicle searches
- Objective 14: Building Searches
- Objective 15: On Leash and Directed Searches
Training the Passive Response Detector Dog
Randy details the modifications within each Objective to fully train a reliable, passive detector dog.
- Objective 1: Selecting a good detector dog prospect.
- Objective 2: Teaching the Target Odor- Reward Association.
- Objective 3: Conditioning the Final Response.
- Objectives 4 & 5: Teaching the dog to divert his attention from reward to target odor.
- Objective 6: Teaching the "Contact Response" (The analog to the "Oral Response").
- Objective 7: Extending the search.
- Objectives 8 & 9: Teaching the dog to ignore distractors and to recognize additional target odors.
- Objectives 10 & 11: The "Contact & Acknowledgement Game" and Problems of access and puzzles.
